What is empowerME4Life?
empowerme4Life
is an 8-session healthy living course to equip kids ages 8-12 with new
attitudes, skills and knowledge about eating better and moving more. It is designed for implementation in afterschool or community settings and is facilitated by older youth or adult allies.
Today, nearly one in three kids and teens in the U.S. is overweight or obese. To address this, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (a partnership between the American heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation) is working to eliminate childhood obesity and to inspire all young people in the United States to develop lifelong, healthy habits.
empowerME4Life is based on the Alliance for a Healthier Generation empowerME Movement's 5 steps kids can take to live healthier:
1. Get physically active for 60 minutes a day.
2. Drink primarily water, 1% or fat-free milk, and 100% juice with no added sugars.
3. Eat fruits and vegetables with every meal.
4. Cut back on screen time (television and computers) and limit it to 1-2 hours a day.
5. Get at least 9 hours of sleep every night.
Each lesson helps kids understand the importance of these skills and behaviors, provides some practice in a fun and interesting way, and offers ideas to take home.
