The mission of Young Women of Promise is to prepare African-American adolescent females for success. Our proactive approach is to promote positive adolescent development and serve young women during the ages in which many important life decisions are affected by peer pressure and negative behaviors such as teen pregnancy, teen violence and drug and alcohol abuse. The Kinston Youth Enrichment Project will implement "A Journey Toward Womanhood" rites of passage program for girls.
Developed by Sisterhood Agenda, A Journey Toward Womanhood is 13-week intensive and comprehensive program with 52 module hours designed for girls of African descent ages 12-17. Rooted in the African "rites of passage" tradition of young women gathering in groups to receive guidance from older women.
A Journey Toward Womanhood builds and maintains healthy self-esteem, instills cultural pride and self-appreciation, teaches life and social skills for self-sufficiency and discourages teen pregnancy, STD's including HIV/AIDS, juvenile delinquency, school dropout, and drug abuse. Young Women of Promise is a member of the Sisterhood Agenda Global Network.
